Just getting active

Since kicking off our brand and social purpose programme Just Get Active in July, our pilot campaign to help build social connections and improve the physical and mental wellbeing of Warwickshire and Coventry's over 50s, has been gathering pace.

On Saturday 14 September we've been helping people achieve a better later life by bringing the fun, fitness and friendship of walking sports to the University of Warwick's fantastic new Sport and Wellness Hub. Through regional BBC and ITV news, local press coverage, radio and social media promotion, we invited older adults to come along to our first taster event and find out what walking sports are all about.

We're pleased to say that the event was a great success. The day was hosted by our Just Get Active ambassador, sports presenter John Inverdale. Our very own Group Communications Director, Stephen Lowe, turned out too. Both donned shorts and trainers to join around a hundred energetic, enthusiastic locals having a go at six walking sports - basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball and rugby.

Many had never played walking sports before. It was heart-warming to see them all really enjoying the games, which were run by coaches from local walking sports clubs. The day gave them the chance to learn how to play and find out more about walking sports opportunities in their local area.
